Jean Arata

Miss Jean is the heart and soul of Miss Jean’s Swimming, and now, also of Miss Jean Music.  Bay Area born and raised, Miss Jean has been in the water her entire life. From McNear’s Beach Pool, where the lifeguards gave her an honorary lifeguard position at just five years old, to competitive collegiate swimming, Miss Jean has been drenched (pun intended) in both swim experience and instruction.
Often incorporating music into her swim lessons, Miss Jean naturally developed the idea for Miss Jean Music. She realized that she could improve her little swimmers’ experience and progression using music, one of the best teaching tools available. On top of that, instructions uniquely tailored to each song give parents and guardians tools to build upon what was taught in the lesson. While Miss Jean Music cannot fully replace an in-person lesson, it reinforces all the necessary concepts. With Miss Jean Music, little swimmers can memorize, practice, and look forward to using what they learned in the pool!
For decades, Miss Jean had imagined her own swimming school, where students could learn efficiently and joyfully. In 2014, this dream was realized when Miss Jean finally began Miss Jean’s Swimming. Her motto, “Love 2 Swim 4 Life,” reflects her focus on child safety and her desire for all little swimmers to become lifelong swimmers.
Miss Jean has tried-and-true methods of using repetition, rhythm, music, and toys to create the perfect environment for learning. Over 30 years of teaching experience means that, as it relates to swimming, she has seen it all. Perhaps even more importantly, Miss Jean is the mother of four adult children, including two with special needs, which makes her a more adaptable, observant, and empathetic teacher.
